Development Swim Team

Samena’s Development Swim Team is a fun, low-key, foundational team for swimmers ages 5-18. Our team is a great way to try out swim team for the first time or continue swimming year-round for those who compete in summer leagues. The team participates in one optional ‘mock’ swim meet towards the end of each session; this meet is not sanctioned by USA swimming.

How do I get on Samena’s Development Swim Team?

  1. Samena Membership is required
  2. Tryout! Tryouts are drop-in and run for 3 days during the month prior to each session (August & December). A tryout should only take about 10-15 minutes per swimmer depending on the wait time. Please check below for times and dates for our next upcoming tryouts. If those times or dates do not work for you, please email swimteam@samena.com to schedule a make-up tryout.
    • All swimmers who are new to our swim team must try out even if they have completed our lesson or pre-comp programs; tryouts are also used as an opportunity for swimmers to meet the coaches.
    • Once a swimmer completes a tryout and is accepted on to the team, they do not need to tryout again for any future sessions.
    • If a swimmer completes a tryout and is not accepted on to the team, they will need to tryout again for any future sessions.

During each tryout, the swimmer will be asked to swim 25 yds of each stroke. Coaches take note of skill level, endurance level, and coachability. In order to be accepted on to the team the swimmer must:

  • Know what all 4 strokes roughly look like – does not have to be 100% ‘legal’
  • Swim each stroke continuously for 25 yds – can rest in between each stroke test but not during
  • Listen and attempt to apply any feedback give by the coach
  • If the swimmer is 11 years or older: feel comfortable attempting a flip turn

After the Tryout, a coach will place the swimmer in the program where they will see the most success, which is hopefully the swim team!

Our goal is to always make swimmers feel confident and comfortable, so please be assured that our coaches take these decisions very seriously. If a swimmer is not quite ready, joining the team environment too soon can be overwhelming and affect their feelings towards the sport. If the coach recommends continuing in Swim Lessons or Teens N Training it is because they believe it is in the best interest of the swimmer and the most appropriate program for them at this time.

Development Team Cancellation Policy

Enrollment for our swim team is a recurring charge billed monthly.  There is a two month minimum commitment to the team. If you are looking to leave the team, you must notify the head coach at least 30 days before your planned drop date.  For example, if you plan to leave the team January 1st, you must notify the head coach no later than December 1st.  Late notification will result in being billed, regardless of whether you attend practice or meets for Samena. If you choose to rejoin the team within two months, back dues for practice fees and membership during your time away will be owed.
